Description zebulon 2015-02-28 19:36:13 UTC
hi
I am using ubuntu 14.10 with the oibaf ppa to use the latest intel driver.

After the update from 2.99.917+git1502260732.53d804~gd~u to 2.99.917+git1502271932.9fb815~gd~u, the screen is now corrupted and partially frozen when waking up from sleep mode.

I am using a 2 monitor set-up with the internal LDVS of the laptop and another one via HDMI.
I have an inspiron 15 3521 with an HD 4000

The way the screen look corrupt is: At least 2 windows appear on 2 monitors but partially. the mouse cursor is visible and moving with the mouse. But the windows are unreponsive.

I have to ssh into the laptop and run "DISPLAY:0 unity --replace" to partially fix the freeze

I got no message in /var/log/syslog or Xorg.0.log

I wonder if it is really related to the 2 monitor setup as I wake up the laptop with the external monitor shutdown and the screen was already corrupted.

Please move the bug to the correct project if I made a mistake.
Comment 1 zebulon 2015-02-28 20:21:44 UTC
It's not only when waking up from sleep.

If I disable HDMI screen from system settings, I got the same corrupt/freeze.
It's the same as running "xrandr --ouput HDMI1 --off"

the left screen, then, shows half a window that you can't move.
Comment 2 Chris Wilson 2015-02-28 20:52:24 UTC
Could you add drm.debug=6 to your kernel command line (grub), reproduce the issue and attach your dmesg, Xorg.0.log, xrandr --verbose and a photograph would be really useful to see the type of corruption.

Comment 8 zebulon 2015-02-28 22:10:03 UTC
so I added drm.debug=6 booted, logged in, close the lid to make it sleep, open the slid, take picture, go to console to run "DISPLAY=:0 unity --replace"

Comment 10 zebulon 2015-03-02 10:35:43 UTC
sorry about the post above.

So I have more news.

I have set the screen to lock when it goes to sleep. So when it wakes up, it should display the login screen. And not the desktop. So the bug is strange. because it shows a corrupted version of the desktop instead of trying to show the login screen.

If I let it go to sleep all by itself (1 hour), there is no problem when waking up.
If I use the "cog" menu and choose "Go to sleep", then there is no problem when waking up.
If I lock the screen with Windows+L and close the lid (or use Go to sleep), then there is no problem.

So this seems to only happen when I close the lid directly. I thought that what happens should be the same than with the other method but apparently, no.

So I wonder if it is really an intel driver bug ? and not unity or something

But I still get a "corrupted" display when I plug off the external display (or use xrandr --output HDMI1 --off), and re-plug it in gives also the same kind of corrupted display as in photo (after.jpg)
Comment 11 Chris Wilson 2015-03-02 22:38:42 UTC
After the corruption starts, if you ssh in and open a new terminal (e.g. xterm) where does it show? Is it shown?

What happens if you revert to 2.99.917+git1502260732.53d804? If you don't have the package anymore, you can build it from git with:

$ sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-intel
$ git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel
$ cd xf86-video-intel
$ git checkout 53d804b134494be8a324781283faecb2968f6511
$ ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
$ make -j4 && sudo make install

If I switch to a console (it's working so I use it instead of remote login with ssh), and run DISPLAY=:0 xterm, the xterm is not shown on the corrupted screen.

I downgraded to 2.99.917+git1502260732.53d804~gd~u, and I had the same problem on closing the lid.

But I downgraded once more to the previous xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.99.917+git1502241642.12af8a~gd~u and this times it worked without problem.
I can manually run xrandr --output HDMI --off without problem this time.

    sna/dri2: Remove limiting pending swaps on redirection changes

    If we limit the swaps, then doing xrandr --output -off causes unity to
    misrender. Not quite sure why, but the revert is easy.
