Patch to fix the issue

The attached patch replaces the use of pkg-config with ${PKG_CONFIG} in the build system. This allows to use prefixed versions of pkg-config; Exherbo, for example, has only copies of pkg-config that are prefixed with an arch triplet.

Passed the nightly build tests fine. Merged into master, thanks a lot.
