In this circumstance, the drm.debug=6 (set on the grub kernel commandline) dmesg is vital.
This is a Dell Dimension 2400 with 1GB of main memory. It's running CentOS 6+ latest updates.
Joe, as Chris requested on comment 1, please add drm.debug=6 to your kernel command line and then attach the output of the dmesg command to this bug report.

Fyi my monitor is an Acer S201HL 20inich.
Unfortunately we cannot give support for your kernel version, which is over 5 years old now. However, it seems your distro have backported a newer i915 driver to it, so you should ask them for support. If you can reproduce the issue with a recent kernel, please reopen.
