This can be avoided by installing coreutils 8.23 from source. It'd be nice to check the version of the installed and figure out the necessary version of coreutils and provide a more helpful error message.

Well, we ultimately don't care which implementation is used, as long as it supports --relative...

That said, I'd be willing to merge a patch that extends the error and suggests to use at least coreutils 8.23.
