When a video is played, either by VLC or by MPlayer, the kernel log /var/log/kern.log is filled with lines like: Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.247407] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.280793] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.280801] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.314152] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.314161] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.347434] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.347443] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.380791] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.380800] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.414181] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.414189] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.447591] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: LBREQ Jul 16 01:44:30 zira kernel: [81562.447600] nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] PBDMA0: ch 2 [Xorg[1209]] subc 5 mthd 0x0000 data 0x0000906e also completely filling dmesg output. Note: my machine is a Debian/unstable laptop with kernel 3.16.7-ckt11-1.
v3.16 was released almost a year ago. Does this happen on a more recent kernel?
(In reply to Ilia Mirkin from comment #2) > v3.16 was released almost a year ago. Does this happen on a more recent > kernel? I can't test: nouveau fails completely with a 4.0.5 or 4.7 kernel (available in Debian). I suspect that this is bug 89047 (similar error messages), according to: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89047#c1
I tested 4.2-rc2 as described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-vivid/+bug/1474538/comments/3 . It just locks up instead of filling the partition (which has the same effect of making the computer unusable :s ). I am cloning Linus' tree and will test v3.19, v4.0 and v4.1. I'll report with my findings. Please let me know if I should test other versions or from nouveau's tree or what not.
