The error state file is never empty; do not trust ls. Please capture it before you reboot.
Paul, is it still reproducible ? If this is still the case please attached corresponding /sys/class/drm/card0/error (please refer to https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/how-get-gpu-error-state) and also try v4.6-rc5 or later.
