Description Jim Haynes 2015-08-01 01:55:05 UTC
Dell D600 laptop running Fedora 22 and LXDE desktop environment works fine with
kernel 4.0.8 After upgrading kernel to 4.1.3-200 I can log in, then get a
window about desktop 1 and desktop 2 and no icon I click on on the desktop
or menu bar does anything.

Where should I look for evidence to report what is going wrong?

Specific video hardware is AMD/ATI RV250/M9 GL Mobility FireGL 9000/
Radeon 9000 (rev 02)
Comment 1 Michel Dänzer 2015-08-01 07:01:25 UTC
Can you bisect the kernel?
Comment 2 Jim Haynes 2015-08-01 16:03:19 UTC
I'm assuming "bisect" means find a kernel somewhere in between the two
I have tested with. Well if I can find such a kernel and figure out
how to install it I will do so.
Comment 3 Alex Deucher 2015-08-01 16:06:09 UTC
Use git bisect to find the exact commit that caused the regression. Google for "git bisect howto".
Comment 4 Jim Haynes 2015-08-01 17:11:09 UTC
Thanks, but I suspect that is well above my level of expertise to
carry out. I will try to find a Fedora 22 kernel in between the
previous good one and the current one and see if that does or does
not show the problem. Would sending in Xorg.0.log be helpful?

Xorg.0.log from system that is failing

I can't even figure out how to make Fedora install an older kernel to see
if that has the problem - but attached is an X log from the defective system
in hopes that will show something useful. Again, with the defective system
the touchpad mouse seems to work normally, but pushing the buttons seems to
do nothing. And when I'm first logged in there is this window about selecting
which desktop, or adding more desktops; I don't get that on a system that works.
Comment 6 Jim Haynes 2015-08-03 02:30:07 UTC
I was able to install a 4.1.2 kernel, and the problem is there with that
kernel. Fedora didn't seem to release any kernels between 4.0.8 and 4.1.2.

Xorg.0.log from system running kernel 4.1.4

it isn't any better with kernel 4.1.4
However I note that a USB mouse plugged in seems to work OK, so it is just
the buttons associated with the touch pad that don't work

I'm about to add a dmesg from the bootup also.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV250/M9 GL [Mobility FireGL 9000/Radeon 9000] (rev 01) which is an AGP card in an Athlon XP 2000+ desktop, works normally, though slowly and with no touchpad, with 4.1.3-200.fc22.i686 and 4.1.4-200.fc22.i686 and KDE here. Mouse is Logitech Marble USB on Bus 002 Device 002..
