Description Eugene 2015-09-10 13:32:37 UTC
After upgrading from Kubuntu 14.04.2 (Linux 3.16) to 14.04.3 (Linux 3.19) old bug thats was resolved appeared again. It was solved in 3.16 by my old bug report, please see it here:

Sorry, but this is what we have: 10, with the same hardware config, desktops in usual school. We don't have more modern hardware.

Looks like the old bug mentioned in comment #0 was in userspace. Do you have systems with the old distro? Can you upgrade *just* the kernel on one of those, and we'll see whether this reproduces the bug.

It's a pity but we have no machine with distro that still not upgraded. All they are with Kubuntu 14.04.3, linux 3.19, and graphics stack from Kubuntu 14.04.2. In this case there is no distortion on a screen.
Comment 11 Felix Miata 2016-02-15 20:09:20 UTC
In attempt to follow-up to comment 9, I started with:
1G RAM
1680x1050 native Lenovo L2251 LCD display
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS"
ii libglu1-mesa:i386 9.0.0-2 i386 Mesa OpenGL utility library (GLU)
ii  xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.6 i386 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver
ii linux-image-generic 3.13.0.52.59 i386 Generic Linux kernel image
ii kde-workspace 4:4.11.11-0ubuntu0.2 all KDE Plasma Workspace components

updated to (added without Xorg update stack or recommends):
ii linux-image-generic 3.19.0.49.34 i386 Generic Linux kernel image

With or without compositing enabled via xorg.conf*, I was unable to notice any kind of corruption of or in desktop, menus, Konsole or Firefox 44.

apt-get upgrade and reboot left me with the following (also with no video corruption evident with or without compositing enabled):
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS"
ii libglu1-mesa:i386 9.0.0-2 i386 Mesa OpenGL utility library (GLU)
ii  xserver-xorg-video-intel            2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.6 i386 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver
ii kde-workspace 4:4.11.11-0ubuntu0.2 all KDE Plasma Workspace components
ii linux-image-generic-lts-vivid 3.19.0.49.34 i386 Generic Linux kernel image

Eugene, where did your MESA 10.5.9 come from?

Eugene, make sure if your BIOS has video buffer size options of 1MB and 8MB that you select 8. You might wish to try removing xserver-xorg-video-intel. I did so on i865G running 14.04.03 (Linux 3.19), which caused automatic use of the modesetting driver. Whether performance is better or worse than with the Intel driver I'm not sure, but Youtube is watchable, and I see no corruption with it either.

I'll check BIOS setting of course. But, look, my problem isn't with youtube, my problem is that GPU is hung and acceleration then turning off.

Without xserver-xorg-video-intel package there is no graphics at all after rebooting.

Hmm, this corresponds to

commit d721b02fd00bf133580f431b82ef37f3b746dfb2
Author: Ville Syrjälä <ville.syrjala@linux.intel.com>
Date:   Mon Aug 8 13:58:39 2016 +0300

    drm/i915: Account for TSEG size when determining 865G stolen base

so worth checking (hmm, that hasn't landed upstream yet).

Hi, Chris. Any chance to put it in upstream someday?
Comment 25 Chris Wilson 2016-09-10 06:45:45 UTC
Yes, it'll land in 4.9 and then back through the stable trees. I was just expecting it to already be in the 4.8-rc (and stable trees).

It would be great. I've been waiting for this for a long time.

With Linux 3.8RC7:

$ dmesg | grep -i error

[   27.845806] [drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir [i915]] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking

And also I'm not able to play any video.

$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

but it works with:

All is OK with Interl-DRM-Next Kernel. Waiting for upstream.
Comment 30 dog 2016-11-17 19:10:20 UTC
Eugene, have you had a chance to verify this is fixed in the upstream driver?
Comment 31 Eugene 2016-11-21 18:13:44 UTC
I will check it as soon as I'll get to those old Intel graphic's machines at the end of current week.
Comment 32 Eugene 2016-11-27 01:18:48 UTC
I removed Interl-DRM-Next Kernel but with upstream kernel all is ok now too. So I confirm that with upstream kernel there is no error messages about GPU crash or render error. Thank you very much. Finally!
