GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card1/error

Currently using nouveau driver, but has recently started tearing badly on external monitor.  Attempted to use DriverManager to switch to the nVidia driver when the hang occurred.  This is Linux Mint on a Lenovo ThinkPad W520.
