On my dell latitude e5440 when I undock and redock I am unable to re-activate both monitors using xrandr. I'm using linux kernel 4.4.5 and the i915 driver. Just to be clear, I'm unable to re-activate both external monitors, which are attached to the docking station; only one works. Then I need to reboot to be able to do so.

Hi Colin, Because it's HSW platform with docking (e.g. built-in with DP-hub/display port converter...etc.), we need more information for it. I would like to get your help to collect some debug log for our analysis further. Please enabled drm debug in kernel message, and collect kennel command/i915 parameter/xrandr's output. Then reproduce this this issue (dock/undock) and sharing them with kernel message with us. Thanks! 1. drm debug-enabled log, echo 0xe > /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug 2. get kernel command cat /proc/cmdline 3 get i915 parameters cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_display_info tail -n +1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/* cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_capabilities 4. get X's information. xrandr -q

By the way I also installed the most recent driver in my distribution last night, which seems to have moved out of testing. extra/xf86-video-intel installed: 1:2.99.917+636+g562ae1f-1
Hi Colin, Please also help to upload kernel message (i.e. enable drm debug log first then reproduce issue) for our analyzing into Gfx driver. Thanks!
According to your information in #5, driver and X-server seems to work well for your two external monitors, right? Does this issue go away by your updated xf86-video-intel? Thanks!
Hi Gary, I updated driver and did 1-4 as described above. When I undock / dock, after your steps the system freeze / halt or panic. Not sure how to record any debugging information when the system halts or panics. Not sure I can capture the logs when the system freeze halt / panics. I will try again later today.
Hi Gary, are you still there? I found the appropriate bug reporting instructions here: https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/how-report-bugs Then I can follow the instructions related to the crash and will report back soon.
As recommended, I will create a new bug on the next crash: Note that a new bug is preferred over adding your GPU crash dump to an already open bug. Most often the cause for the GPU hangs are different, and it is easy for the developers to mark bugs as duplicate.
Hi Colin, Yes. please refer the https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/how-report-bugs for collecting log. BTW for quickly checking, could you reproduce this issue (running "echo 0xe > /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug" prior to issue reproduction) then doing following things if not suffering system halt. cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state > ~/i915_error_state.log dmesg > ~/dmesg.log If system halted, please reboot then get "kern.log" (kernel message). Finally, please always upload "kern.log" in folder "/var/log/" and i915_error_state.log/dmesg.log (if not system halt). Thanks! Because I don't have your docking system, it cannot reproduce it in my side and need your detail of log further.
Hi Gary, I was able to get the log! Since I'm using systemd, the kernel logs are found in journald. Hi, I wanted to update that the same behaviour as described occurs to me with Lenovo x250 notebook connected to Lenovo docking station. I'm running Ubuntu with kernel - 3.19.0-58-generic. Please upgrade to v4.11, and if the problem is still reproducible, please add drm.debug=14 module parameter, and attach dmesg all the way from boot to reproducing the problem. (See the "Add an attachment" link near the top; adding logs as comments makes the bugs hard to read.)
Hello Leon, Is this bug still valid with the latest kernel on your case? If so, please share the information requested to proceed. Thank you.

I'm not experiencing those problems with v4.11.5 (stable) anymore. ➜ uname -a Linux mtr-leonro 4.11.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jun 14 16:19:27 CEST 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux Thanks > > -- > You are receiving this mail because: > You are on the CC list for the bug.
