Description bollocks.k2 2016-05-31 01:07:41 UTC
I'm using a Tecra M11 with a QM57 chipset and a Intel 560M processor with Ironlake graphics.

uname -m = x86_64
xf86-video-intel version: This has been reproduced with a git clone from May 30 2016. I noticed it with 2.99.917-19.20160530.fc23 from the Fedora repo.

uname -r = 4.5.5-201.fc23.x86_64

does not occur with 4.4.9. it started happening in 4.5.0

Linux distro: Fedora 23 and I can also reproduce it on F24 Beta

I'm using the built in 1600x900 LCD as a display.

The problem is when I use ctrl+alt+f2/f1 to switch terminals the screen has graphical glitches and sometimes freezes.

For a detailed description and lots of debugging output see my bug on Red Hat Bugzilla.

Same happening here on my Fedora 23 Gnome
with kernel 4.5.5-201.fc23.x86_64
on an Thinkpad X230
(CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz)

lspci -v | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.917-19.20151206.fc23.x86_64

Here is a snip from journalctl: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/376234/

I also noted that a kernel regression test (https://git.fedorahosted.org/git/kernel-tests.git) performed on that system does not come to an end. Logs are here: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/376201/ (with SELinux disabled), and here https://paste.fedoraproject.org/376204/ (SELinux enabled).
Comment 2 Flo H. 2016-06-09 14:52:58 UTC
updated to kernel 4.5.6. problem persists.
Comment 3 bollocks.k2 2016-06-11 02:25:22 UTC
I upgraded to F24 and was still able to reproduce the problem in kernel 4.5.5 and 4.5.6. After upgrading to 4.5.7 from updates-testing I no longer have an issue with graphical glitches when switching to a tty in text mode and no longer have screen freezing.

However when switching from a text mode to a graphics mode tty the glitches are a little worse. There is no screen freezing so this update is a great improvement for me. I did have one issue when I logged in using the LXDM log in screen and while I was logging in I switched to a text mode tty using ctrl+alt+f2. I had no issues switching but when I switched back there was a weird graphics glitch where the wallpaper was tearing combination of my normal wall paper and the LXDM logging screen. I believe LXDM puts the wall paper as the x11 root window because if I run i3 without logging in through LXDM I get a black wall paper.

When I started programs the programs showed up fine and operated normally. I was able to log out and after reinitializing the graphical mode everything was fine. This occurs whenever you log out of your WM and LXDM takes over and shows the log in screen. It kind of gives you a blank slate. After logging in again everything was fine. I haven't been able to reproduce this error.

I'm learning to use ffmpeg and I think it allows you to do screen capture videos. I'll try to get some captures of these glitches one I figure it out.

Also I am not seeing any FIFO underrun errors in my dmesg after upgrading to 4.5.7. Some selected dmesg output:

Comment 5 bollocks.k2 2016-06-18 11:44:56 UTC
I'm running Fedora kernel 4.5.7-300.fc24.x86_64 and updated almost my entire gpu stack to the master branch of the git repo on Jun 15, 2016. All the glitches are gone. I didn't update xorg-x11-xserver because an API change meant rebuilding a bunch of stuff. I'd mark it closed but I'm not sure how that goes with someone else having the same problem.

Flo H., kernel 4.5.7 has been to pushed to stable in F23. If you want to try newer Intel GPU stack components without having to go through the hassle of rebuilding them check out my COPR repo. I built them for F23 too.

This one has the latest tagged version from each git repo:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/bollocks/intelgpu/

This one has the master branch from 2016-06-15:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/bollocks/intelblood/

I left libva-intel-driver out because that one comes from rpmfusion and I think it might not be allowed on COPR.

This bugzilla is for the upstream. If it's fixed upstream, it's fixed. Thanks for the follow-up.
