With patch from http://pastebin.com/kZyiZMR5 to enable HDMI audio causes GPU hangs when playing a video.

We can't support patches that have not been merged upstream. Please reopen if you can reproduce the problem with upstream kernels.

The problem is when I use an upstream kernel I get no audio at all.

I don't know where the "Skylake" part comes from, this is about missing LPE audio support for certain BYT/CHT models. Sure, some i915 bits and pieces are needed for that as well, but the main thing is the audio driver. Can't help you with that, sorry.
