To get X working I have to start a X server, kill it, and start it once more. The first X server displays some garbage with a piece that can be moved by mouse, sometimes shapes that look like blurry parts of the desktop can be seen. The garbage is usually mostly red, but last time I tried it was green. Using latest git mga driver, xserver git. With earlier server and drivers I never experienced such problems.

With what version (or even better: commit) was that introduced?
I'm not sure. I tried to go as far back as 1.2.1.3 (the earliest release available), and it still did not work. I am using the FBdev option because some of the 1.4 versions did not work without that. Frobbing that option had no noticeable effects, at least with one of the later 1.4 drivers. But I am quite positive that the 1.2 version of the driver worked. It is used in the previous version of Ubuntu and I had no problems with that. However, the card I used back then was probably a bit different.
with xserver 1.1.99.901 and 1.1.1 and the latest mga it does not work. the 1.2.1.3 mga does not build with 1.1.1 server. The only thing to try is to find a different card to try. Perhaps this one is deficient.
Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
It goes away when the linux matroxfb is completely disabled. xserver 1.2.0, mga 1.4.6.1
What happens if you disable the "UseFbDev" switch in xorg.conf, and re-enable matroxfb in the kernel again?
Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
