Recent versions of fontconfig give a warning with the current configuration:

  Fontconfig warning: line 146: blank doesn't take any effect anymore. please remove it from your fonts.conf

Are there plans for a new release with an upgraded fontconfig?

2.12.1 was just released 3 weeks ago.  The version included was the newest at the time of the release (2.11.1).  fontconfig will be updated in the next release of Xquartz.

XQuartz-2.7.10_rc2 has 2.12.1

Awesome this solves the problem. Will XQuartz 2.7.10 be final around the date of macOS 10.12 release (next week)?

Not likely.  I want to give it a good amount of time for people to give feedback on the libXt / Motif resolution.
