Text file, from /sys/class/drm/card0/error

I had been using Fedora 22 on my Dell Latitude E6410 for over a year and also on a desktop PC. Since it is no longer being updated I decided I should upgrade to F24, starting with the laptop.

At first I thought the upgrade was successful but then found that the machine was freezing randomly, and sometimes would not complete a resume(thaw) after hibernate. After this had happened a few times, I noticed this in /var/log/messages:

Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] stuck on bsd ring
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 5:2:0x01000000, reason: Engine(s) hung, action: reset
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
Sep 26 15:49:52 lape kernel: drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang

So I am attaching that error report as a text file.

My machine has the following configuration.
 Display: WXGA+ Anti-Glare 1440x900 display (14" diagonal)
    Memory: 4GB (2x2048MB) 1066MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
CPU: Intel. CoreTM i5-540M (2.53GHz, 3M cache) with Turbo Boost Technology
                (four core)
Graphics: Intel: HD Graphics With Express Card
Often referred to as Intel GMA 500 (or Poulsbo)
                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_500

I did not have any such problems while running Fedora 22.

I regret that I am not a linux developer so if you wish me to do any testing with different software installed I shall need
very precise instructions about what to do.

I hope this information is useful and look forward to a fix!
Thanks.

Because this bug was wasting so much of my time I have gone back to Fedora22
4.4.14-200.fc22.x86_64

If I am informed of any progress on this problem I am willing to go back to F24 to test it.

A very similar bug (insofar as the gpu hangs after resume on ilk's bsd ring) are known to be fixed in v4.8. That should only be a gpu hang and not a system freeze though.

I can't find v4.8 using dnf update or using yumex-dnf. Are 4.8 rpms for Fedora24 available somewhere? If so I am willing to try.

It'll be released next week. You might find 4.8-rc7 or -rc8, or a drm-intel-nightly rpm in the meantime.

Thanks. I found the appropriate repo
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RawhideKernelNodebug

Kernel update got me this:
4.8.0-0.rc8.git0.1.fc26.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Sep 26 15:16:34 UTC 2016

It seems to work, and I have managed to hibernate and resume a couple of times, so I'll stick with it and see what happens.

Thanks.

Kernel 4.8 still working on my laptop with no problems with hibernate/thaw

So I installed F24 with the 4.8 kernel on my desktop PC, which also uses Intel graphics, and that has also been working perfectly, including hibernate/thaw.

Thanks.
