Description hedwig 2016-10-04 20:02:37 UTC
My Intel Skylake ASRock multimedia PC (OS openSuSE Tumbleweed, Pulseaudio version 9.0-2.1) does not show the actual used HDMI connection with surround options in Pavucontrol, Stereo sound works fine.

The mainboard has 2 HDMI and 1 DP connectors. It's no matter which of these connectors is connected to my AVR.

Can you attach the output from "pactl list cards"?
Comment 2 hedwig 2016-10-10 18:31:49 UTC
Sure, here is the output of "pactl list cards", my remote control also has a microphone and a headphone connector.

pactl shows that there are surround profiles for "HDMI" and "HDMI 2" outputs, but "HDMI 3" only has the stereo profile. Is your problem that you want or have to use "HDMI 3"?

What do you mean by this? Do you mean that regardless of which physical output you use, only the "HDMI 3" stereo profile produces audio and the "HDMI" and "HDMI 2" profiles do nothing?
Comment 4 hedwig 2016-10-12 16:08:22 UTC
I mean, that the connected profile (no matter if it is HDMI, HDMI2 or DP) only has a stereo profile (which is working). If I connect another cable, than this one will have no surround profile and the other ones will have surround options.
Comment 5 Tanu Kaskinen 2016-10-13 12:24:37 UTC
Does "speaker-test --device=hdmi:0,0 --channels=6" work? You can also try with --channels=8. This test bypasses PulseAudio, so if surround audio doesn't work with plain alsa, there's nothing PulseAudio can do.

hdmi:0,0 corresponds to "HDMI" in PulseAudio, hdmi:0,1 corresponds to "HDMI 2" and hdmi:0,2 corresponds to "HDMI 3".
Comment 6 hedwig 2016-10-15 13:08:52 UTC
The speaker test did say, that the number of channels is not valid for this device.

But I did found a workarround. Connecting a HDMI and the DP connection, but using only the DP connection works, because only 1 of 3 connections is missing the surround options.

Strange behavior! Where could be the problem?
Comment 7 Tanu Kaskinen 2016-10-20 12:42:08 UTC
> Strange behavior!

Indeed.

> Where could be the problem?

No idea. The alsa driver developers might know.
