XQuartz 2.7.9 works perfectly on this Mac OS 10.7.5 machine, but upgrading to 2.7.10 introduces two issues: startup is very slow, and Xft font hinting appears to be broken (fonts at large sizes have odd shapes, e.g. the trunk of the letter "f" is very thin), at least to the extent that it is used in WINE 1.7.33 under Wineskin 2.5.5. Re-installing XQuartz 2.7.9 fixes it. I wanted to set the Version of this bug to 2.7.10, but that version appears not yet available in the bug tracker.

Please try 2.7.11_rc1 when it is available later today as it will have the patch from fontconfig.
Bug is still present in XQuartz-2.7.11 (released 2016-10-29), so I'm not convinced this is really a duplicate of #97546 (unless that one wasn't really fixed in 2.7.11)

I should have stated more clearly: I meant BOTH issues (slow startup and font hinting) are still present in 2.7.11 on Mac OS 10.7. If we are not discussing the font hinting issue here, then this bug is only about slow startup in 2.7.11 and should probably be retitled. Either bug 97546 has prematurely been marked fixed in 2.7.11, or this is a different bug.
