Created attachment 128322 [details] dmesg with drm.debug=14 Since new install of my Linux System and using a 4.4+ Kernel (before 3.19) I'm getting kernel exceptions every time I disconnect my via HDMI connected Monitor. Many improvements pushed in kernel. Can you re-test with latest drm-tip kernel from (https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip branch drm-tip)
stefaus please review comment before by Rami to test with newest configuration is important to maintain collaboration from submitter side as well to contribute to the solution. Created attachment 130156 [details] 170310 - dmesg with drm.debug=14 Hey, sorry for my late response. The bug is still present and in attachment the dmesg log of the latest drm-tip kernel.
I have a similar problem (ironlake… pipe A stuck) at shutdown if I use my external HDMI monitor. Normally, Ubuntu 17.4 shuts down in something like 5 seconds. With HDMI connected, it takes some 40 seconds. This has been the case with different flavours of kernel 4.10. I just installed 4.11.0-041100-generic and the problem remains. Hardware is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2677M CPU @ 1.80GHz.
Surprisingly, this happen in some dual monitors configurations but does not happen with the HDMI only. I usually start my session with xrandr --output eDP-1 --auto --pos 0x312 --output HDMI-1 --auto --pos 1366x0 --primary With this I get the pipe A stuck, a stop job is running… for 40 seconds during shutdown. But if I execute xrandr --output eDP-1 --off --output HDMI-1 --auto --primary --pos 0x0 before shutdown, I get a normal shutdown of about 3 seconds.

Hello Dominique, This seems to be a different problem, could you please try to reproduce with the latest kernel https://www.kernel.org/ and open it in a new bug and attach dmesg with drm.debug=0xe parameter on grub, HW and SW information, and steps to reproduce. Thank you.

Hello Stefaus, Sorry for the delay, it this still valid on latest kernel https://www.kernel.org/ and/or latest drm-tip? Thanks.
Hi there, I have just installed the latest drm-tip kernel and can confirm the bug is still present. Please let me note that this bug is affecting a lot of people using the Intel Graphics cards and the latest Linux distributions. This bug is extremely annoying for those of us working with two monitors. To reproduce (and cause a complete freeze / crash of my system) all I have to do is to connect/disconnect my secondary HDMI monitor a few times. Here is the version of the kernel I have installed: bruno@galaxy:~/Downloads$ ls *.deb linux-headers-4.13.0-994_4.13.0-994.201708042250_all.deb linux-image-4.13.0-994-generic_4.13.0-994.201708042250_amd64.deb linux-headers-4.13.0-994-generic_4.13.0-994.201708042250_amd64.deb Version of the kernel currently in use: bruno@galaxy:~$ uname -a Linux galaxy 4.13.0-994-generic #201708042250 SMP Sat Aug 5 02:52:07 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux bruno@galaxy:~/Downloads$ lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [144d:c0cd] Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 31 Memory at f0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M] Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] I/O ports at 3000 [size=64] [virtual] Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 bruno@galaxy:~/Downloads$ modinfo i915 | head filename: /lib/modules/4.13.0-994-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko license: GPL and additional rights description: Intel Graphics author: Intel Corporation author: Tungsten Graphics, Inc. firmware: i915/bxt_dmc_ver1_07.bin firmware: i915/skl_dmc_ver1_26.bin firmware: i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_01.bin firmware: i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin firmware: i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin Here is the latest crash report I've got on kernel.log: Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656047] pipe A vblank wait timed out Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656082] ------------[ cut here ]------------ Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656124] WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 991 at /home/kernel/COD/linux/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:11907 intel_atomic_commit_tail+0xf70/0xfa0 [i915] Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656125] Modules linked in: ccm rfcomm snd_hda_codec_hdmi snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_hda_codec_generic bnep binfmt_misc intel_rapl x86_pkg_temp_thermal intel_powerclamp coretemp kvm_intel arc4 snd_hda_intel iwldvm snd_hda_codec kvm uvcvideo snd_hda_core mac80211 snd_hwdep videobuf2_vmalloc snd_pcm irqbypass samsung_laptop videobuf2_memops iwlwifi videobuf2_v4l2 intel_cstate snd_seq videobuf2_core videodev btusb joydev intel_rapl_perf snd_seq_device btrtl media btbcm snd_timer btintel input_leds serio_raw bluetooth cfg80211 acpi_als snd ecdh_generic mei_me lpc_ich soundcore kfifo_buf industrialio mac_hid mei shpchp parport_pc ppdev lp parport autofs4 algif_skcipher af_alg dm_crypt hid_generic usbhid hid i915 crct10dif_pclmul crc32_pclmul ghash_clmulni_intel pcbc aesni_intel i2c_algo_bit drm_kms_helper Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656165] aes_x86_64 syscopyarea crypto_simd sysfillrect sysimgblt glue_helper fb_sys_fops cryptd psmouse ahci drm libahci r8169 mii wmi video Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656177] CPU: 3 PID: 991 Comm: Xorg Not tainted 4.13.0-994-generic #201708042250 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656177] Hardware name: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. 900X3B/900X4B/900X3B/900X4B, BIOS P10AAH 12/20/2012 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656179] task: ffff96b518b88000 task.stack: ffffb621c0d60000 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656206] RIP: 0010:intel_atomic_commit_tail+0xf70/0xfa0 [i915] Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656207] RSP: 0018:ffffb621c0d63aa0 EFLAGS: 00010286 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656209] RAX: 000000000000001c RBX: 0000000000000000 RCX: 0000000000000000 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656210] RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: ffff96b51f2cdc78 RDI: ffff96b51f2cdc78 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656211] RBP: ffffb621c0d63b58 R08: 0000000000000001 R09: 000000000000032c Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656212] R10: ffffb621c0d63aa0 R11: 000000000000032c R12: ffff96b510990000 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656213] R13: 0000000000000000 R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 0000000000000001 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656214] FS: 00007f60e9065a00(0000) GS:ffff96b51f2c0000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656216] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656217] CR2: 0000003c36640a10 CR3: 0000000119047000 CR4: 00000000000406e0 Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656218] Call Trace: Aug 7 09:12:19 Galaxy kernel: [ 249.656225] ? Good afternoon Bruno, Thanks for you cooperation. We are aware that these bugs are a real problem for our consumers and our intentions are to fix them as fast as possible. Unfortunately some of these cases are really hard to solve or we have an unusual amount of bugs raised in FDO, so we have to delay some bugs in order to close the most critical. To proceed with this case, could you please attach a new dmesg with the latest kernel with drm.debug=0xe on grub and a xrandr --verbose? Thank you.
Certainly. Here is all the drm messages in the kernel.log, excluding only the frame buffer (FB: ##) lines: https://pastebin.com/KT2uTbcM Please note that with drm.debug=0xe on, the laptop didn't crash when the "[drm:ironlake_crtc_enable [i915]] *ERROR* mode set failed: pipe A stuck" error came up. Instead, it just froze with a blank screen for about a minute and continued to work. It feels like it took a long time to recognise the HDMI hot plug event and adjust the screen resolution. Below you can find the output of xrandr --verbose, while both monitors are connected. Please let me know if you need more information or tests to be done. Thanks for the quick answer Bruno. If more information is needed, it will be commented below.
Spoke too soon. The kernel crashed and the laptop frozen after a while, probably when I left my desk and the secondary monitor went to sleep. The link below will allow you to download the kernel log from the moment I booted to the moment it crashed. https://ufile.io/xfuow Around 9:08 I connected and disconnected the external HDMI monitor multiple times to see if I could make it crash. As I said before, it didn't crash, but it would freeze with a blank screen for around a minute and then resume. At 9:26, when I got back to my desk, it had crashed and I could see the error messages (PIPE stuck) on my screen. That is when I had to restart the laptop to get it back working. The only things I have excluded from the kernel log are the frame buffer (FB: ##) messages, but can include them if you need. Happy to paste or upload the kernel log to a different location if your prefer. Cheers, Bruno
