When I move my mplayer OpenGL video window completely out of screen (common in some Windows Managers), then the rendering to that window suddenly takes one full second per frame.  Of course the video is invisible anyway, but the sound is almost suspended because it takes too long.  (I could work around this by looking at the current window coordinates and skipping any rendering if it is out of screen.)

Anyway, I can reproduce with the glxgears demo: the frame rates goes from some 60-ish/sec to 1.000/sec.  Here is the gdb traceback of the glxgears calling modules/dri/i965_dri.so calling libGL calling libxcb, where it seems stuck in a poll() until some timeout occurs.  I am reporting this problem about i965 as the most likely source but it could also, I suppose, be in the rest of libGL or even in libxcb().

Armin, I believe this is actually an issue with the X server's Present extension implementation.

Keith - it sounds like Armin is using a video player, and minimizing it/moving it offscreen in order to listen to the audio track.  But Present vsync'ing it to 1 FPS while off-screen is making it unable to keep up with the audio processing.

I do wonder if we should just vsync to 15/30/60 FPS...it seems like there are a bunch of applications that behave unexpectedly when vsync'd to 1 FPS...

Yes, that looks correct.  I did not know that the 1 FPS was actually expected.  And yes, mplayer seems not happy at all about sudden order-of-magnitude FPS changes, and anyway 1 FPS is probably too low for it to recover from.
