Description Troy Korjuslommi 2007-10-10 02:23:58 UTC
The Finnish kotoistus layout, in order to work fully, needs
some entries which conflict with the en_US.UTF-8 file. Otherwise
the same values can be used. The file at the URL is a file with
changes to the en_US.UTF-8 Compose file, not the complete new
file. The new fi_FI.UTF-8 file should be created anew.

These changes are urgent especially for Sami users, who need
the changes to produce some of the characters used in Sami.

xkeyboard-config does not deal with Compose files
Comment 2 Troy Korjuslommi 2007-10-23 03:15:59 UTC
This bug for adding a new Compose file for Finnish is in the xlib now, so can I presume that this is noticed? I also noticed there was a request to move Compose files to xkeyboard-config. Please advice.

Sergey, do you want to take this one?

(If you're happy with xk-c taking Compose files as well, want to add yourself to MAINTAINERS while you're at it?)
Comment 4 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2007-12-11 14:19:47 UTC
Daniel, at this point I think I am not ready to take Compose files. But I am considering that possibility. So feel free to commit that Compose file, without waiting for my decision.

Cheers,

I see that in addition to some compose sequences which would be useful additions to the en_US.UTF-8 table, you propose having the dead acute, diaeresis and above ring keys generate the corresponding spacing diacritic characters when followed by a <space>, where the en_US table generates the ASCII quote and double quote and the latin1 degree characters..

Do Finns actually use the spacing diacritic characters?

<dead_acute><dead_acute> and <dead_diaeresis><dead_diaeresis> can already be used to enter ´ and ¨. Only ˚ is missing from the current table.

I am concerned that those using the fi_FI.UTF-8 locale when editing code will find the loss of ' and " to be an unwelcome surprise.

I will add the <dead_stroke> combinations to the en_US table. Those are useful to have there in any case. (Most of the resulting characters can be entered with <Multi_key><slash> or <Multi_key><KP_Divide>, the corresponding <dead_stroke> versions arguably should have been added when dead_stroke was added to keysymdef.h....)
Comment 6 James Cloos 2007-12-14 22:27:00 UTC
I pushed the <dead_stroke> additions to the en_US.UTF-8 Compose.pre file in commit 4d6c45e60ed13d3b0fea10413873d6a74f9d6a3b.

I’d still like to hear whether <dead_acute><dead_acute> for ´ and <dead_diaeresis><dead_diaeresis> ¨ is sufficient, so that ' and "
can also still be entered.

Also, if anyone has any input on whether <dead_abovering><dead_abovering> and <dead_abovering><space> should continue to enter ° (U+00B0 DEGREE SIGN) or whether one or both should enter ˚ (U+02DA RING ABOVE), please post comments here.

Bugzilla Upgrade Mass Bug Change

NEEDSINFO state was removed in Bugzilla 3.x, reopening any bugs previously listed as NEEDSINFO.

As I recall, the spacing diacritics behavior was added because that's how it was in the previous layout in respect to the other diacritics. Other than that, I've seen it used when discussing diacritics. If there is need, I can dig up more info on this issue.

The ascii quote and double quote characters have their own positions in the Finnish keyboard layout.

My apologies for not entering this change when I submitted the keysymdef.h entry. I misunderstood the best way to handle the two changes. I didn't realize the Compose file was part of the binary distro, whereas the keysymdef.h obviously is.

This bug should be removed.
I filed a new one to add a fi_FI.UTF-8 Compose file as xorg bug #18747.
