I have i845G graphics chipset. (Driver i810). Installed X.org version 6.8.1. Try startx command, black screen and crash system (no one event), only reboot for help. Version X.org 6.7 all right.

I have an i830(M) and exactly the same problem. 6.8.0 was ok. If I use the (binary) i810_drv.o from 6.8.0 all is well.

I think I have similar problem in Fedora Core 3 (xorg-6.8.1). The display gets corrupted completely and it is not useable. This system worked fine in Fedora Core 2 (xorg-6.7.0). So, I have tried using the i810_drv.o from Fedora Core 2 and it did not help. I am not sure what distribution you use, but could I have a copy of your binary i810_drv.o (under which you do not have this problem)? I could verify if it works fine for me. Then I had what you describe as a completely corrupted and unusable display. I was able to resolve this with a fresh i810 driver from the latest xorg CVS. It is attached.
Created attachment 1363 [details] Working driver made from CVS
Depending on your kernel, make sure you are using the i915 DRM kernel module and not the i830 one.
Closing this bug as it's not been updated for a while and I can't replicate the problem with 6.8.2 at all. Re-open with more details if there's still problems.
