Description nanophase 2005-02-05 14:52:20 UTC
I succeeded to extend the desktop to my external TFT, but it's resolution is
being set to 640x480. Once I set the MetaModes option, the external tft remains
blank. Comment that line out, 640 again. It seems to me as a driver issue. If I
set Metamodes so that both displays use the same 1280x1024, it's a clone mode
but with a viewport of 1280x800 as it seems, I can scroll the screen on both
displays (laptop and external tft). Hoped I would have just black bars around on
the bigger screen..
So please advise, or point me to a tutorial or a sample config for such a
configuration. I already reported bugs in the radeon doc since following it not
only didn't help in this situation, but had mistakes making the X server not
even start. So I think that's not really up to date.

Thank you
attaching my config..

Could you attach your X log? It sounds like the driver isn't able to get DDC
data from the external monitor so it's reverting to 640x480. try specifying the
crt2hsync and crt2vrefresh options in your config. Also in your monitorlayout,
you have the second monitor type set to TMDS. does your laptop really have a
DVI port? If not, you should probably change this to CRT.

Just for the record, the notebook has a VGA output (and a tvout). My external
TFT has a VGA and a DVI port, so I connected the notebook to the VGA of course
(DVI goes to the desktop computer). I didn't know how this TMDS and all things
work so it will be better if I set it CRT. Will do right after work, and report
back.

Thanks for the info Alex!

So it was the CRT. The name was misleading, documentation says "external flat
panel" = TMDS. What they meant there is DVI then, for the analog input it must
be CRT in the config, even for a TFT (my TFT has 1 analog and 1 digital input).
Too bad the resolutions are not the same on both screens, lappy is wide (well
that's good). A hint to others: use below if the width is the same, it's much
better so :)
Will try the svhs out next. Let me know if it's known not to work with these
drivers, so I don't do for days ;)

Thanks Alex again!
