Have tested on old documents as well. 

When I click on Preview, it shows for a few seconds then disappears.

On which environment are you ? (Windows, Linux, MacOs) If Linux, which distribution ?
Just in case you would be on Ubuntu, if you have lo-menubar installed, could you try again with lo-menubar uninstalled ?

Distro: Ubuntu 12.04 (up to date)

I have removed the lo-menu extension, and this seems to have resolved the problem.

"Resolved" the missing freeze problem as well.
