Description Gerry 2012-07-14 06:58:21 UTC
The new dialog for conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc 3.6 Beta3 has some issues:

How to reproduce:
* Type in first cell 1, second cell 2 and third cell 3.
* Mark these cells
* Got to "Format"->"Conditional Formatting"->"Conditional Formatting"
* See description of problems below:

* It is not possible to select a cell or cell range as value for the condition.
This was possible in the old dialog and it is an absolute MUST for the new
dialog.
* The new name of the menu entry "Format"->"Conditional Formatting"->"Conditional Formatting" does not make much sense. Why "Conditional Formatting" nested in a sub-menu of "Conditional Formatting"? The second dialog should be rather called "Add conditions".
* Why does the first dialog start empty when every user wants to define at least one condition when opening this dialog?. When opening the dialog for the first time, there should be at least a first condition already visible.
* There is no button anymore for "New Style", but it is rather buried in the
list of styles. This is IMHO counter-intuitive. It would be better to have a separate button.
* What is the rationale behind the decision to have two dialogs for
conditional formatting (the first dialog is the one showing up when clicking on "Conditional formating" and the second dialog when clicking on "Add") and another third dialog for "manage" the conditions? Particularly the first dialog of "Conditional formatting" and the dialog of "Manage" seems to cover the same functionality. Why is it like that? It seems to be inconsistent.

Problems with the German translation:
* The German translations for "Cancel" and "OK" have typos: "~Abbrechen" and
"~OK". Same problem is in the first and the second dialog.
* The German translation "Apply Style" is wrong. It is "Bestätige Vorlage" (and
in fact is not fully readible), but should be "Vorlage zuweisen".

System: Ubuntu 11.10, 64-bit, german local, LibreOffice Version 3.6.0.0.beta3
(Build ID: f010139) installed from the DEB (including German language pack).
Comment 1 Gerry 2012-07-16 06:59:02 UTC
I would like to describe the first bullet point of the "problem list" a bit more in detail, because I think it is the most severe point of the list:

It describes a major regression in the new dialog, which is not a design issue, but it is a loss of functionality.

In the old dialog it was possible to click into the field where you can enter the conditions, then you could select/pick a cell or cell range with the mouse as value for the condition. This feature is lost in the new dialog. Now I must manually type in e.g. "$Sheet1.$H$17:$H$19", in the old dialog, I could simply "pick" it.

Since I cannot install the release candidates here, can anyone please check whether the regression as described in comments 1 still prevails in release candidate 1 or 2? Thanks.
Comment 3 Herbert Geiger 2012-08-10 06:06:06 UTC
I think none has done what gerry told us.
Now the new conditional formatting hs been distributed wiht 3.6.0 and - it works as it was reported!
And in addition - saving a file distroys the conditional formatting done with 3.5.5.
This seems to be a little show-stopper!
Comment 4 Herbert Geiger 2012-08-10 08:37:49 UTC
first diagnosis:
1. i've got my msi via µtorrent chronologically near to the announcement letter
2. after installing the new version (3.6.0.4 Build 932b512) i found the reported misbehavior
3. after reporting (this morning) i've seen that the tracker for this file stopt working. aha!!!
4. fetched the new? torrent und got a msi with the same name as under 1. but with a different file size and the same Build.

for this i had to do an in depth analysis of my problem.

now my problem looks like that the "between" condition looses the cellreference?
try to construct a testcase for this problem
Comment 5 Jean-Baptiste Faure 2012-08-10 08:51:30 UTC
For the problem of between condition, see bug 53010 fixed in LO 3.6.1

reproduced in 3.6.3 on RFR 17 64 bit
all parts of initial description are true until now

> It is not possible to select a cell or cell range as value for the condition
IMHO this is most important among described problem and it is regression.
I know that this dialog is unfinished new feature. As I understand, it will not fixed until 3.7.0 because adding button is new feature, not a bug fix.
Comment 8 Markus Mohrhard 2012-11-12 05:51:36 UTC
Per ESC decision there are no regressions in new features/dialogs.

Also it is fixed in master and will not be backported.
Comment 9 Gerry 2013-01-13 10:48:42 UTC
I checked the Release candidate 1 for LibreOffice 4.0 and IMHO the issues described in the report and the comments are solved. I mark this bug as resolved->fixed.

While testing, I realised smaller usability issues with the dialogue which fall more in the category of small enhancement requests. I opened two entries for these enhancement requests:

Bug 59316 - Conditional formatting: Usability improvements for the cell range picker in new conditional formatting dialog

Bug 59317 - Conditional formatting: Usability improvements for condition styles in new conditional formatting dialog

@Markus: You did a great job with the new conditional formatting dialog. Thanks!
