Description Alin M Elena 2016-01-16 22:57:37 UTC
Hi,

I have a funny situation... on a dell xps 9350
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Sky Lake Integrated Graphics (rev 07)
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6500U CPU @ 2.50GHz

with kernel-4.4.0-3.g75554c0 i get a black screen at boot... is just after grub but before systemd starts logging.. Randomly, once in 10 black screens boots.

however with 4.4.0-rc7-3.g75554c0 built by me with the same configs as the 4.4.0 kernel boots every time.

I do not know if this is an issue with the card... but looks like...

I don't know what those kernels are; what patches do you have on top of upstream? Can you reproduce with vanilla upstream?

Hi Jani,

you are right I repeated with vanilla and the same story...

the diff between default and vanilla is as follow.

Please tell me the git commit ID of the kernel you've tried from Linus' tree.

Please add drm.debug=14 module parameter, and attach dmesg. If possible, please do so when you're experiencing a black screen (either ssh into the box or ensure you get the logs on disk).
Comment 4 Alin M Elena 2016-01-19 10:26:32 UTC
this is the one I tried and booted.
5807fca

with the logs may be tricky to get since when I get a black screen there is none.. and I have no network card on that machine.

Alin

when 4.4.0 boots I keep getting this... I suspect totally unrelated...

Does your distro save the logs from previous boots?
Comment 6 Artem S. Tashkinov 2016-01-31 22:56:45 UTC
A have a similar yet different problem, see bug 93950.

The laptop boots up just fine, but the screen dies if I restart the Xorg server.

Thanks, I think we'll settle with that. Closing.
