Description Pierre Ossman 2004-12-02 08:59:08 UTC
FC3 with Xorg 6.8.1. Radeon 9700.

When changing to a text console from X then server locks up stealing keybord and
mouse. System still responds to network and power button.

If "NoAccel" is used then the server does not lock up but the state is not
properly restored. Instead I get remains of the image (the same junk you get
when starting the X server before it clears the memory). Changing back to the
server with Alt+F7 works fine.

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace works fine in both of these cases, as does shutting down the
machine (console is restored when X server is killed).

This behaviour appeared in 6.8. The machine was previously running FC2 with xorg
6.7.0.

Same here on Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

Difference is that ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't work. Only remote login + kill X
works.

Either ctrl-alt-f1 and chvt trigger the bug.

I am using a dual-head setup with a digital flat panel from the laptop and a
connected CRT. To make this work, I have to specify MonitorLayout, this might be
the cause of the problem.

On 6.7.0 indeed this worked.

Please note that when the freeze happens, all the X server seems to do
(according to strace and ltrace) is write messages in logs that (EE) some
timeout expired, every few seconds. It does nothing else. Sorry I can give more
detail, the log file with the respective entries seems to have vanished :-(

Also note that when killing the X server in this state:

 - only kill -9 works
 - the screen is left in graphic mode, there is no way to get it back to
character mode

This bug appeared for me when I applied the patch on Bug 1559 (attachment 1133 [details] [review])
to 6.8.0. It works fine with the regular 6.8.0 module. I suspect a connection.

The same behaviour happen to me.
Linux is Suse 9.2
Xorg is 6.8.2
Graphic card is Ati Radeon Mobile (RS100 IGP329M)

The new Ati (17/02/05) fglrx driver report that this bug is solved
but they doesn't work with my card.

Cheers, Max

It's definitely a bad interaction between the radeon module and the Xorg binary,
because it also happens when you run a new Xorg binary with an old radeon module
(where it used to work).

I have the same problem when I'm using 6.8.0.

The problem only shows up when I'm using my T40 in a docking station which is
connected to both an LCD screen (IBM L200p) and a CRT (IBM P260).

I am using Xinerama. Alt-Crtl-Backspace or Alt-Crtl-F1 will result in a
"freeze". I have no keyboard/mouse response. I don't know if its X that's
freezing or the entire system.

I've tried using the MergedFB support in the radeon driver and the problem still
occurs.

I've also tried recompiling my kernel with no fb device and the problem still
occurs.

Is there a patch I can apply to 6.8.0?

same problem here.... I am running X.org 6.8.2 with a radeon 7500. Cant drop
from console from X. Strange thing is if I shutdown X and restart it every thing
works fine. I can move to console without any problems if i restart x. However,
the problem returns when I reboot.
