[Problem]
Graphics corruption with KMS enabled

[Original Description]
I can't see things right now to report the bug, but I wanted to run ubuntu-bugs xorg while there was a curruption present. i'll fill out this bug more completely later.

First: I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 beta. My system updates are current.
  I have a radeon rs690m (x1200)

This is the problem I ran into:
  * Small, horizontal white lines that appear a bit like static. Not very noticeable, and not present currently.
  * Medium and large horizontal lines / areas of corruption.
    * Stripes are often screen-wide
    * Stripes can be scrolled, e.g., in Firefox or Nautilus.
    * Refresh of graphical object clears up corruption -- E.g., a mouseover of a link or highlighting an icon
  * Mouse Pointer gets corrupted at some points, until refreshed (e.g., when the cursor changes from pointer to question mark, or to a hand, or from hand to arrow, etc.).
    * Corruption occurs regardless of whether or not Desktop Effects are enabled (important later)
      * Corruption might only occur after desktop effects *have* been enabled during this run.
  * Some fonts become corrupted. If they do, the letters corrupted stay corrupt. I.e., if "k" gets corrupted, and I type "k" elsewhere in the same font, that too will be corrupted.

It would be really nice to fix this before the release of Lucid -- I can't imagine what would happen with all the rs690 users out there. Not that there are a lot, but, there are enough.

Workaround (sort of):
In /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf, I set:
 options radeon modeset=0

Why just "sort of"?
  * Logging into the (only) account created when the system was 9.10 fails, at best booting me back to the login screen.
  * Logging into an account created since the system has been upgraded to 10.04 works fine, desktop effects and all, no graphics glitches.
  * Logging into the 9.10-made account with desktop effects disabled works fine.
  * Enabling desktop effects once logged in makes the system visually unusable -- cannot switch to console, graphical screen black except for mouse, but the system is still running. I can ctrl-alt-delete from a 'text' console, although there is no text -- it just shows what was last in the graphics buffer (a black screen with the mouse pointer present).

Note that although there were glitches graphically, desktop effects or not, the system worked with desktop effects enabled when kms was enabled.

I think there are probably two problems here:
1) KMS causing or making visible some kind of horrible memory badness that I don't understand
2) Desktop Effects config in 9.10 can be set to a state that doesn't play nicely in 10.04 with KMS disabled.

Any further information I will be happy to provide. I have a workable system, I can just transfer everything over to a new account on my system, but I want to make sure others aren't affected problematically -- and it would be nice just to use my old account.

-Brian

+1 from me.

For me, KMS doesn't change anything: the bug happens whatever the KMS settings.

Also, desktop-effects only changes the speed at which the bug hits me.

A quick way to reproduce the bug on my computer: open a big web page in Google Chrome (or Chromium) and scroll up and down quickly and repeatedly. Or, in Firefox, play on a website that does animated resizing.

Oddly, if I manage to keep using my system for a while after it goes all garbled without rebooting (most of the corruption is relegated to glyphs, so changing font sizes helps), it will eventually limp back into a state which is almost usable. (As I'm posting this, for example, only the "6"s and "[" in "Bug 27529 - [rs690m]" are garbled. Half an hour ago, almost every glyph was garbled.)

Oh, and not to pester, but this bug is _horrible_ and I don't know of a workaround. Any hints?

> [...] desktop-effects only changes the speed at which the bug hits me.

That may be true for me, also. I was having some issues with desktop effects disabled, but I was thinking I'd had them enabled previously. ..but, that would have been a different login session.. ..anywho. If it needs to be checked, I can reboot without the workaround.

Scrolling up and down quickly and repeatedly in Firefox causes a lot of garble for me, as well.

The only one I know is in the bug description, about halfway down. It's short, so you may have missed it.

Alex how do I apply this patch. I tried to find radeon_device.c but I don't see a file anywhere. Do I need to download the source and compile the driver? If that is a case is there any chance the newer releases will be patched? I can always hold off on updating my distro even though the new boot times are nice.

Thanks,
Jason

You need the kernel source. You need to apply the patch and rebuild the drm module if you use the source to your current kernel, or the whole kernel if you use a vanilla or git kernel tree. The patch is not likely to be upstreamed. It's just a test patch; if it helps, I'll code up a proper fix.

Alex,

Unfortunately, your patch didn't help here. I'm running kernel 2.6.32.12, libdrm git, mesa 7.8 git, and xf86-video-ati git.

As I mentioned in bug 25469, I get corruption with UMS as well, at least when using xf86-video-ati 6.13.0 (or previous development versions). I have not been able to reproduce it while running 6.12.x.

6.12.x doesn't support kms, so make sure you disable kms when using 6.12.x or you will likely end up with sw rendering or hangs, etc.

I know, I have direct rendering in both KMS and UMS cases. I guess I'm just trying to say that this is not a KMS-only problem.

Hello,

I found a quick hack that seems to fix the problem (on my Packard Bell DOT M/A, AMD Athlon 64 L110, ATI Radeon X1270 (rs690m)).

It's very simple and works for the kernel 2.6.34 and 2.6.35-rc2 :

* Open drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/rs690.c
* Find the line that contains "bool sideport = false;", line 236 for 2.6.34
* Change "false" to "true"
* Recompile you kernel, on simply the radeon module : make drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon.ko
* Install
* Enjoy

Now I have a question : why not using "radeon_atombios_sideport_present(rdev)", or even "rdev->mc.igp_sideport_enabled" if already available ?

Cheers.

It was just a bug in the code. The bandwidth code was added before the code to detect if sideport was present or not.

I tried this with kernel 2.6.32.15 (it wouldn't compile with Alex's patch), and it didn't help. I'm planning to test this with kernel 2.6.33 and possibly 2.6.34 in the near future.

I'm using a Gateway LT31, which is essentially the same machine.

Screenshot of a part of my corrupted screen.

Hello,

The problem is still here. The fix I proposed only delays it one hour or more.

It is possible to trigger the corruption by playing a game that allocates many GL objects. I used Plee the Bear, a 2D OpenGL-based game that uses many textures. It loads about 60 megabytes in the video memory.

When the game is loading, my screen is filled with garbage from top to bottom, in one second or two. It is progressive, and comes across my two screens (one on the top or the other), without any distinction. It is mainly brown or dark green, the colors used in Plee the Bear.

I attached a screenshot of a part of my screen. I see it as garbage in KSnapshot, dolphin and Chromium, but as my video memory is corrupted, I cannot garantee that this screenshot is as I see it. It normally shows a part of a Konsole window, and a part of the one of Plee the Bear.

The problem arise also with other games, like Neverball, when I play it many minutes, but Plee the Bear allocates so many GL textures that it triggers the bug way faster.

I have 256Mb of shared video memory (RAM), and 128Mb of sideport memory. I use an ATI Radeon X1270 (RS690M). I use Linux 2.6.35.1 (but it does the same with the 2.6.36 kernel, before the -rc1 tag, but after the two merges of DRM), mesa Git as of today, libdrm Git, Xorg 1.8 (the latest 1.8.x rc, the one packaged by ArchLinux testing), xf86-video-ati 6.13.1. I used the Gallium r300g driver, but the bug is also here with r300c.

Cheers.

(oh, and as I was posting this comment, I scrolled another web page. My top screen, the one without Chromium, was filled with white and small black pixels. There is no particular pattern, but I can see the garbage layed out in small 64x64 squares. The scroll was very slow, but the web page looked nice. Screenshot coming if I can).

My corrupted dual head setup.

I add that my mouse is occasionally replaced by a 64x64 white square, filled with the same pattern as my top screen.

Ubuntu 10.4 user with a pair of ATI FireMV 2250 cards (RV516 chip)
running Xinerama across three monitors (one monitor output is unused)
using radeon driver on an AMD-64.

Over time, single characters in Firefox get mangled. Typing those
characters into text boxes also shows the mangling. Changing the Firefox
font size up or down (CTRL-plus, CTRL-minus) restores the characters
at the new size; setting the font back to the original size (CTRL-zero)
returns the mangling again. Sometimes the characters disappear entirely.
Restarting Firefox didn't help until I added "Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
to my xorg.conf file; now, restarting Firefox clears the font problem.
(It didn't before - I had to restart the X server.)

I didn't have any font problems when I ran a single FireMV 2250 with
an Nvidia card for the third monitor, but that was on a previous kernel
as well. It's the dual 2250 (on the new kernel) that is now misbehaving.

Downloading the xorg-edgers radeon driver 6.13.99 didn't help.

I'm now seeing font glyph corruption in a GVIM window as well as Firefox.
See the attached image.

GVIM glyph corruption on only one of three Xinerama displays

In this screen capture, I've placed this GVIM window so that it is
half on the Middle monitor and half on the Right monitor (of three).
You can see that the middle monitor displays the lower-case letter "U"
correctly and the right monitor has the corrupt letter. No other letter
is affected. Changing the font or size in GVIM fixes the corruption,
until I change it back. The font is DejaVu Sans Mono (or Monospace)
Regular size 10. Moving this window completely onto the Left or Middle
monitors shows no font corruption. It only happens on the Right monitor,
which is on the first FireMV 2250 graphics card. (The Left and Middle
monitors are both on the second FireMV 2250 card.)

Screenshot of 2 3D programs corrupting each other

Hello,

Here is a screenshot of Neverball corrupting Super Tux Kart. It's also possible to have STK corrupting Neverball by launching STK after Neverball. The last launched program corrupts the previously launched ones.

It seems there is a bug in the memory management, but I don't know if it's always there, RS690-specific, or triggered by the Sideport memory.

I looked at the source code (radeon module in Linux 2.6.36-rc3) but didn't found anything interesting. I looked in TTM and GEM code, but I don't know if TTM is used on an IGP card.

I use Mesa Git (as of today), Linux 2.6.36-rc3, libdrm Aug 26, XServer 1.9 and xf86-video-ati 6.13.1.

Regards.

Is there anything else that is needed for this bug, or any way that we can help?
Comment 31 d4ddi0 2010-12-08 09:07:27 UTC
I have been experiencing this issue on Gateway LT31 with opensuse.
Switched to gentoo (kde) with git head driver, but the issue remained.

I switched from kde to xfce and the issue seemed to go away (Makes it look like a KWin problem)

With the update to kde 4.5.4, I have tried KDE again, and this issue seems to be gone for me on gentoo, using either classic or gallium driver.

Good news!
Comment 32 shomi 2010-12-09 19:15:22 UTC
I too am using a Gateway LT31 netbook,
I would like to add a point worth mentioning, on ubuntu 9.10 there where no corruptions whatsoever !
What has changed that made our graphic cards loose their minds ?

On a fresh install of maverik (10.10) my second screen would show moving lines and all messed up stuff + screw up the laptops screen.
I updated to 2.6.37-020637rc5-generic and now the second screen works with no problems.
The screen corruptions still exists.
Comment 33 d4ddi0 2010-12-10 07:30:34 UTC
After a few days of perfect operation I have seen a new example of corruption:
playing "The Ur-Quan Masters", which uses an openGL backed SDL drawing context.

This is with gentoo ~amd64 (xorg-server 1.9.2.902) (mesa 7.8.2), gallium ati driver from git, libsdl 1.2.13, and uqm 0.6.2.
Running xfce/xfwm window manager.

Steps to Reproduce:
Start uqm
(settings resolution 1024x768, either fullscreen or windowed)
Corruption is evident in the main menu as some of the menu entries are garbled.
Select Super Melee for even more spectacular garblement in the ship selection screen.

I could not reproduce this with classic mesa.
Comment 34 Dave Airlie 2010-12-11 22:15:22 UTC
if anyone is using r300g on rs690 and seeing texture problems you can try

http://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/scratch/0001-r300g-hack-for-rs690-tiling-alignment-issues.patch

got a bit more cleanup todo next week.
Comment 35 Jerome Glisse 2011-03-07 10:38:36 UTC
Closing this bug, if you have 3d issue please open a new bug against 3d driver and first test with lastest git.
